First Aid/CPR Training in Austin

First Aid Training AustinWhat is First Aid?

First aid is the initial care provided by a responder with little equipment to someone who is injured or has suddenly become ill.

What is First Aid Certification?

Courses providing a basic body of knowledge and skills a citizen responder needed to respond confidently and effectively in an emergency. The emergency care procedures taught are based on the most current recommendations published by the International First Aid Science Advisory Board. The First Aid training program and certification by

What is CPR?

CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. CPR is a series  of immediate actions taken when a person suffers a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). During a SCA, the heart stops suddenly and the victim’s brain is no longer getting oxygen. If oxygenated blood flow isn’t restored within a few minutes, the victim will die. CPR training teaches lay and medical rescuers to recognize the emergency, call 911, assess for breathing and restore the flow of oxygen to the brain with chest compressions and rescue breath.

Why CPR?

The main reason is to restore oxygenated blood to the victim’s brain following a SCA or sudden cardiac arrest. Following a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), the victim is not breathing adequately or not breathing at all and the heart is not pumping oxygenated blood to the brain and vital organs; clinically, the victim is dead. However, biologically the victim still has a chance at survival. After 4–6 minutes without oxygen the brain will be permanently damaged. After 10 minutes without oxygen, the brain is dead, and biological death has occurred. Biological death is irreversible. We do CPR to keep the brain alive after an SCA by pumping blood to the brain with external chest compressions.

Austin CPR trainingWhat is AED?

AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator. It is a safe and easy to use device that delivers a therapeutic electric shock to the heart as treatment for a victim in Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). AED’s are mobile and often found on the walls of public and corporate venues, much like a fire extinguisher.

Why do we use AED’s?

During SCA, the heart stops suddenly and in 90 percent of cases, the heart goes into a fatal rhythm known as ventricular fibrillation. The only treatment to correct ventricular fibrillation is to defibrillate by applying an electric shock to the heart. AED’s provide the means to defibrillate. AED’s can be used on a victim of ANY age, and by people with no medical training. AED training may become a mandatory requirement in the upcoming 2015 CPR guidelines.

AED FACTS:

  • AEDs can be used on adults, children and infants
  • AED usage within the first three minutes of SCA can increase survival rates over 80%
  • 4 out of 5 cardiac arrests (88%) occur at home, so it’s likely that if you know CPR and have access to an AED you may save the life of a loved one.
  • Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is present in almost 90% of adult cardiac arrest; the only way to stop V-Fib is with a defibrillator
  • The sooner an AED is used, the more likely it will work. An SCA victim losses 7-10% chance at survival for every minute after SCA that an AED is not used
  • Less than 8% of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of a hospital will survive

Bloodbourne Pathogens (BBP):

In 2009, there were 3.3 million reported cases of workplace illness or injury. Our training in BBP will help to reduce an individual’s risk to exposure and meet your organization’s requirement for annual training in bloodborne pathogens, as described in the Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens Standard 29 CFR1910.1030.

Topics Covered Will Include:

  • Understand basic information regarding HIV, hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV)
  • Learn the routes of exposure, techniques to reduce the risk of exposure, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
